A practical note from Photo Play Studio

Color by number from a photo: printable pages for kids

A color by number page made from a photo keeps the subject a child already loves, a pet, a toy or a favourite place, and adds numbered areas with a colour key. Start with a free sample to see how the numbers work, then make a private pack from your own photo without signing up.

How a photo becomes a color by number page

An image model redraws the photo as black-and-white line art. Code then finds the larger closed areas, places number labels and builds a colour key, and lays out the page as a Letter or A4 PDF. The colours are estimated from the photo, so they may differ from the original, and small details may change in the drawing.

Photos that make good numbered pages

Choose one subject that fills much of the frame, in good light, against a plain background. Big, simple shapes such as a toy, a fruit or a pet lying still give larger areas that are easier to number and colour. Busy patterns, long fur and crowded scenes create many tiny areas, which suit older children better or may not be numbered at all.

What to check before printing

Compare the drawing with the photo, look for numbers in areas too small to colour, and check that the key matches the colours you have. If the line art is not suitable for numbering, you may receive a clearly labelled photo-based pack instead, where the numbered activity becomes colour finding on the photo itself.

Try a prepared example, then your own photo

The free starter packs below have manually reviewed colours and number positions, so they are a good way to see the format. When you are ready, make a pack from your own photo. Free tries are limited to 5 packs in any 24 hours; after that, each pack uses one generation credit, from US$0.99. Your pack is private for 24 hours, so download the PDFs you want to keep.

Questions parents ask

Can I make a color by number from my own photo for free?

Yes. Free tries are limited to 5 packs in any 24 hours, with no signup. Each pack has six activities, including a numbered colouring page; if the line art is unsuitable, it becomes numbered colour finding on the photo.

Will the colours match the photo exactly?

Not always. The colour key is estimated from the photo and the drawing may change small details. Check the page before printing.
